Leadership in Humanity

By: Francesca Mundrick

Leadership is one of the most complex, crucial, and inherent traits of humanity. Are we born leaders as part of our human spirit or do we become leaders through interacting with our world? Leadership is the nexus of human progress. Without leadership, successful human society would only be a vision and not an actualized reality. Leadership is a skill found within an individual who is practiced in sociability, empathy, balance, and interpersonal communication. It takes strong social and emotional abilities to be an effective leader. Leadership is not only about structured logistics such as delegation, multi-tasking, tactical approaches, and tracking duties, but rather more importantly, it is a practice of guidance, mentorship, and perpetuating growth for those being led by interpreting needs, strengths, and weaknesses.

What makes a leader truly special is their ability to take on the weight of leading itself. While leading is positive, its realities and actions are challenging. While you may believe that leadership is only for certain people, leading exists in everyone and in many contexts. Consider the leadership that exists in your own life.

The foundation of a strong leader is confidence derived from the deep understanding that fear is what holds us back from reaching our true potential. Confident people do not know it all; they are willing to continue on a journey of exploration and challenge to eventually know it all. Confidence is suffering in Western society and it is taking a toll on our ability to have strong leadership.

Leaders in the 21st Century must be adaptable, socially thoughtful, and methodical. As we move forward as a human race, powerful leaders are more important than ever. Do not shy away from leadership. Use your gifts and make a difference in our world.
