A Letter of Gratitude to my Younger Self: Honoring my True Nature

By: Nicole Troy

Dear Young Nicole,

I wanted to write this letter of intention and gratitude because we are on a journey right now that is both spiritual and meaningful. Our future’s so bright and your spirit has been a catalyst and inspiration for what our life will look like moving forward. As of today you have completed your second Master’s degree in an environmental field. You have also taken a leap of faith and moved to Maryland. A dream fulfilled of being right by the water. This pivotal time is one of new adventures both professionally and personally! You are on the path of making a difference for the environment, something that you have always felt so keenly connected to through your years around animals and time spent in the great outdoors.

As I continue to pave my way forward into adulthood you burn so brightly with-in me and I feel so intrinsically connected to your youthful and passionate spirit.

There is a buddhist proverb that describes how by discovering our soul we can identify our true nature. Our true nature is the guiding power behind the body, mind and our decisions.

Nicole, you are my true nature, the part of my soul that was born with a bright-eyed, curious, empathic, reserved, yet eager nature. The guiding force behind my intrinsic need to help others. The part of me who feels the expansive joy, pain and wonder of the Earth and the creatures that reside on this magnificent planet. The one who laid down the foundation to eagerly explore, ask questions and find healing in nature. You are a student of science, of human behavior and of spirituality.

You are also a guidepost and teacher. Your experiences have taught me to travel and appreciate all cultures. You are my inspiration for looking at the world with vivid appreciation of all things small and large.  And my guiding light in looking at situations with empathy and an understanding that as sentient beings have the capacity to love fiercely, feel deeply and connect.

Thank you for always being bold, passionate, keenly observant and strong.

Our stories so vividly overlap and my appreciation for your guidance through our experiences and memories are immense.

Love, Future Nicole
